Apparently, My freelancer.com woes are not over. If you remember my blog post about freelancer.com and the suspension, (click the link here) After constant harassment on social media platforms, they finally looked into the issue.
Long and behold, that freelancer’s account was suddenly closed and I was refunded in full. Looks like after looking into the issue I wasn’t lying at all about this freelancer logging into my freelancer account, releasing payment, then giving himself excellent feedback on my behalf.
How did this freelancer get my password?
Once simple mistake. I used the same password for a WordPress login that I provided him which was my personal password that I used for everything. That freelancer took advantage of that and started trying to log into everything.
I made efforts to try and change my passwords everywhere I could, but it was too late. This freelancer had gone on a rampage, hacking my Gmail this morning as well as my Skype. I no longer have access to my skype or any of my 100+ contacts that I have been working to build for the past six years. My PayPal has been hacked twice to the point where they have figured out how to actually log in from a Michigan location and pull funds from my account.
I have nearly lost my VPS server. They have hacked that as well and I just spent over an hour with my hosting company trying to get it back.
I am DEVASTATED! I had two clients who had paid me for jobs (I don’t spend the money until the work is done) and all that money is gone, wasted on some miscellaneous crap on ebay. I don’t even shop on ebay. Needless to say, PayPal has pulled those charges, but I have to of course WAIT FOREVER to get them all back.
I feel like I’m done with this business. I’m so sick and tired of the crap that comes with working online. I’m going to do my best to finish up these jobs, regain my accounts back, and try to move on from this, but just to let you know.
Don’t ever share a password you normally use with anyone. That unethical freelancer on Freelancer.com has taught me a very hard lesson and has possibly cost me my reputation and my business.
This is my fault I know it. I should have never trusted anyone with a password so personal to me. However, in my six years of business, this has NEVER happened to me before. I suppose there is a first time for everything.
Now I have to put a security freeze on all my credit reports and only god knows what else.
Now, to go and see what else has been hacked.
To all the clients that it may seem like I am ignoring. I’m doing what I can to pull your info from PayPal to make contact with all of you, and I’m very sorry for any inconvenience caused.
Update: Looks like I’ve lost my fiverr and origin account. This is going to be a long week. 🙁
